Tell your Reps: “Don’t Slash Funds for the Poor or Disabled!”

Earlier this week, the President released his 2018 budget proposal, which would slash funds for Medicaid, food stamps, welfare, Meals on Wheels and Social Security Disability Insurance. Don’t let our nation’s budget abandon the people who need help the most. Call your members of Congress and say, “No budget cuts to the social safety net!”

As Congress sets to work on drafting a 2018 budget in the coming months, the American people must make it loud and clear that severe cuts to the social safety net for the poor and disabled are unacceptable! The president’s proposed budget would cut more than $1 trillion in social programs. This includes cuts over the next decade of more than $800 billion from Medicaid recipients, $272 billion from welfare and food stamp program recipients, $72 billion from Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients, and ending all funding for the Meals on Wheels program. All of these proposed cuts would help to fund massive tax cuts for the very wealthy. Faith leaders have said through the years that a budget is a moral document — if this is true, then the proposed budget is an immoral document that hurts the very people who need help the most!

Call or write to your House representative and to Senators Booker and Menendez. Your talking points:

  • “I want my country to protect the poor, the sick, the disabled and the elderly.”
  • “The proposed budget is NOT acceptable. We should NOT cut programs for the poor, the sick, the disabled and the elderly in order to give tax cuts to the wealthy.”
  • “I want you to do whatever you can to prevent any cuts to Medicaid, Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance, welfare, food stamps and Meals on Wheels in the 2018 budget.”
