Educating NJ Voters: Community Dialogue

October 16, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Attention NJ voters! Do you want to be better prepared for this November election? Then please join us! This event will focus on providing participants with the tools to understand the offices up for election and how to analyze candidates’ positions and make informed decisions. What issues will the elected officials who win in November be making decisions about in the next year? How can NJ voters better understand how these issues not only impact them but also all NJ residents? Instead of focusing on specific candidates, this event will consider a few key issues that you can learn more about in order to make effective decisions in November. This event will include the following:

1. Short overview about the types of offices up for election and the primary responsibility of those offices

2. Power analysis questions (a series of questions given to participants they can use when examining any issue and assessing any candidates’ position)

3. Election issue: jobs/taxes/pension: How can NJ voters make sense of candidates’ positions on complex economic and labor issues? How do we create NJ jobs that provide a living wage?
Speakers:

-Louis Di Paolo, Legislative Coordinator, NJ Working Families
-Brandon McKoy, Policy Analyst, New Jersey Policy Perspective

4. Election issue: the environment: How does climate change affect the decisions NJ elected officials will make? How can NJ voters better understand the impact of the pipeline and toxic waste in NJ?
Speakers:

-Dr. Catherine Riihimaki, Princeton University
-Dr. Emilie Stander, Raritan Valley Community College
